Now I can watch my Fiesta ST (and CX-3 I guess) from anywhere in the world! This purchase was compelled by theft from my carport and various negative interactions with my neighbour that I share the carport with. I desperately wish I could move, but I’d be looking at $600K to $700K ($CDN) for a place and my wife and I could likely not make that work.

Could always move here to Nova Scotia where you could find a decent enough ‘normal’ house for 200-300K! Not sure how hard it would be for you to find work though, haha!

Can’t help but notice lots of similarities on my end: giant asshole next-door neighbor + unrelated attempted theft + moving’s not financially worth it. (also: a Ford under a fitted cover lol)

We put cameras up a few years ago – even just from a peace of mind standpoint, they’ve paid for themselves many times over!

Moving is tough. Gridlock is real. Victims of housing gridlock.

Loving the ST car cover. Does that always go on?

It does yeah. I only drive it in the sunshine/dry.

It’s not at all relative in our market. The average house is 17x more than the average yearly income here. Prices are driven mostly by foreign demand (i.e. parking/washing money).

What kind of asshatery is your neighbor perpetrating, and what course of action would you take if you caught it on camera?

That describes it really well! On one hand, it’s frustrating that with all this extra equity, one can’t make an acceptable step up. On the other hand, I’m happy we got into the market while you could still actually get something fairly decent.

If nothing else, this’ll be an interesting year: potentially lots of gov’t changes, plus current uncertainty in the market. Wonder if that’ll go anywhere...

Weather sucks in February, but NS is nice May through October and sometimes into January (the seasons shift about 1.5-3 months depending on the winter - the ocean varies in temperature much more than BC). Make sure you have an offer in hand, a lot of the job market there in many industries is “who you know.”

That being said, 250-300K will get you a nice house with a garage walking distance from the ferry to downtown Halifax, with lake and city views. For comparison 600-700K will get you a dated but otherwise nice older house in one of Halifax’s toniest neighborhoods.

Also factor in winter beater costs - salt air and road salt eats cars up in NS.

^^^ What he said! And if no winter beater, at least make sure you try and wash your car regularly in the winter and have it undercoated every year!

8 billion stars for that post, Spring in NS means a nice wash and wax followed by some wire brush/Tremclad artistry

I thought I’d ask this of both of you: if you had a price range of $350,000-$450,000 with an aim of a nice, smaller home and garage close to parks, the water and Downtown Halifax/Dartmouth, where would you look at?

My wife and I were in NS last summer. We looked at Bedford (prefer not), the Hydrostone neighborhood (garages are hard to come by) and Herring cove (a little far/no garages).

Bedford is for people who want to pay double and have a super long commute so they don’t have to live in Dartmouth or Herring Cove. I agree with your assessment - there’s not a lot of upside to Bedford living.

I have friends in Herring Cove, they like it but they work close by. The houses tend to be older, but if it’s not a bad commute to your work then it’s not a bad choice. It’s pretty far from the nightlife of downtown though.

As much as it is the butt of local jokes (they call it the Darkside) Dartmouth has good schools, and is a short ferry ride from downtown. Think North Van relationship to Downtown Vancouver. Most people ride the ferry.

A bit below your range, but I know this house, and it has a commanding view of the lakes and harbor, walkable to ferry, though you won’t need a gym membership walking up that hill - 270K:

https://www.realtor.ca/Residential/Single-Family/19234980/145-Joffre-Street-Dartmouth-Nova-Scotia-B2Y3C7-Dartmouth

It is walking distance to the lakes - the paddling/rowing lake is down the hill and also has swimming/skating too. Only real downside is some older apartments down the hill, but other than that, it’s a good value.

Also even more convenient to the ferry, is this one - no garage, but it’s a monster lot:

https://www.realtor.ca/Residential/Single-Family/19273784/279-Portland-Street-Dartmouth-Nova-Scotia-B2Y1K2-Dartmouth

If you’re feeling sassy, backs onto the golf course, though the yard is a bit crap, but 4700 sq.ft., $499K, but you’re kind of committed to the bridge:

https://www.realtor.ca/Residential/Single-Family/18930047/61-Forest-Road-Dartmouth-Nova-Scotia-B3A2M4-Dartmouth

All of these are good Dartmouth neighborhoods. New houses add a lot to your commute or to price (close to the harbour is pretty built out).

In Halifax, this is a nice area close to the universities, Point Pleasant Park and downtown and on the edge of the really really expensive real estate:

https://www.realtor.ca/Residential/Single-Family/19214156/973-Brussels-Street-Halifax-Peninsula-Nova-Scotia-B3H2S9-Halifax-Peninsula

Pretty small, but it does have a garage. There’s usually a few of these smaller houses in the south end that come up in that range.

Fun fact: Point Pleasant park is still part of the UK (it’s British Crown land, rented from the UK government for 1 shilling per year).

Sorry - late reply! Someassembly would know more than me, however...I live in Mahone Bay and only lived in Halifax for university in residence, so I think he has a better gist of the housing situation there than I do! :)

Commutes from Bedford are pretty long though. I have friends in Beaverbank, which is past Bedford and past Lower Sackville. He works in Bayers Lake and says the commute can be pretty crummy at times...

I’ve heard decent things about Herring Cove....nearby Spryfield is not the best of neighbourhoods, but Herring Cove seems like a nice place. Close to one or two nice parks there as well if memory serves (correct me if I’m wrong someassembly!)

Not sure on cost, but have you considered living somewhere further out on the outskirts, like Hammonds Plains?

Ack, man. I feel like this has been me the past few years, only on the rental side. I finally bit the bullet on a nicer place that had most of my wants, but I swear I’ve been hoping to move out my current place for years. Every time I’d look, though, what I wanted shot up in price just further out of reach. >:(

I have come to terms with the fact that I’m going to be eating a lot of whatever people leave at the track for a while. (P.S.: Please forget more pimiento cheese.)

As a writer (forgive me if I have no clue about what I’m talking about) can’t you live pretty much anywhere? I’d imagine there are some cheap little towns and cute villages in Texas you could set up in.

I’ve only had really minor things stolen, a snow shovel in the middle of winter and my shop vac. I know that people do still rummage around in my cabinet out there.
